Accused Me Annual Conference – Birmingham, 2026

The welcoming and excellent Craig Shaw coordinated and chaired the AccusedMe organisation’s meeting in The Priory Rooms in late September 2026. A young falsely accused man gave a moving one-year-on talk, saying ‘the future being so out of my hands is something I’ll never forget’, but echoed the hopeful feel of the event, going on ‘something that nearly destroyed me also gave me purpose.’

Stephanie followed with a talk on the theme of Keeping Up Appearances, and the need to try to continue as normally as possible in the face of reality-warping false allegations, referenced the excellent Stand By Your Man group. JR Webbe spoke about new book Justice or Injustice, and in the afternoon Nicola Hutchinson of Reeds legal firm spoke about the many problems with appeals, litigants-in-person and the importance of pre-charge representation.

Barrister Nick Cartmell lightened the mood somewhat with an entertainingly showboating speech in the ‘classic Rumpole’ mode, deflecting or absorbing questions from your reviewer (and many others of the hundred-plus audience) with ease. Cartmell’s talk was arguably the most controversial of the day, with more than one member reporting being ‘triggered’ by the good barrister’s apparent defence of a British justice system that had treated many in the room so badly.

David Horton closed out the day, a successful businessman laid low by false allegations and wrongful conviction, with the amusing aside that it was his company that built HMP Thameside, were he was resident for some time. From Holiday Inn to The Priory Rooms, Craig and his team made everyone feel welcome, valued and most importantly, better.

It is of course a pity that AccusedMe is needed, and indeed has such a large Facebook group, but while it is the good people of AM are there to navigate the terrified and upended through it all.
